Occupational therapy (OT) helps you do the everyday activities that matter most—safely, confidently, and with as much independence as possible. For many older adults living with chronic conditions, OT can reduce strain, improve function, and make home life easier.
What occupational therapy focuses on
Daily routines: bathing, dressing, toileting, grooming, and meal prep
Home safety: fall prevention, safer transfers, and reducing trip hazards
Energy conservation: pacing, planning, and simplifying tasks to reduce fatigue
Strength and function: improving hand use, coordination, and endurance for real-life tasks
Adaptive equipment: recommending and training you to use tools that make tasks easier
Why OT is especially powerful for chronic disease
Chronic conditions like arthritis, COPD, heart failure, diabetes, neurologic conditions, and chronic pain can change how you move, how much energy you have, and how safe certain activities feel. OT meets you where you are and helps you adapt—so you can keep doing the things that give your day meaning.
What an in-home OT visit may include
A home safety check (lighting, rugs, stairs, bathroom setup)
Practice with real tasks (getting in/out of bed, showering, cooking, laundry)
Recommendations for equipment (grab bars, shower chair, reacher, sock aid)
Strategies to manage fatigue and pain (pacing, positioning, joint protection)
A personalized home program that fits your routines
When to consider OT
If you’ve noticed more difficulty with daily tasks, increased fatigue, fear of falling, or you’re recovering from an illness or hospitalization, OT may help. A referral from your provider can start the process, and many plans—including Medicare—may cover medically necessary therapy.
