The Hard Yes List: Finding Meaning in Everyday Life

Recently, I watched a TED Talk with one of my clients that explored the idea of creating a “hard yes” list—a list of the people, experiences, and values that make life meaningful and deserve our time and energy.

One image from the talk stayed with me: a dog riding in a car with his head out of the window. He was completely present—feeling the breeze, taking in the world, and enjoying a simple moment of freedom and happiness.

That image is a wonderful reminder that life is often made up of ordinary moments that bring us joy. A hard yes might be spending time with someone we love, enjoying a favorite place, listening to music, preparing a meal, or simply being outside and noticing the world around us.

How This Connects to Rehabilitation

Rehabilitation is not only about improving strength, balance, mobility, communication, or daily skills. It is also about helping people return to the activities and experiences that matter most to them.

For one person, a hard yes may be walking safely to the mailbox. For another, it may be playing with a grandchild, sitting comfortably with a pet, attending a family gathering, or enjoying the feeling of fresh air through an open car window.

When therapy begins with a person's hard yes list, goals become more personal and motivating. Exercises and strategies have a clear purpose: they help someone participate more fully in the life they value.

Making Room for Meaningful Moments

Progress does not always look dramatic. Sometimes it is the confidence to take a few more steps, the ability to complete a familiar routine, or the endurance to stay engaged in a favorite activity a little longer.

At Western Mass Rehab Group, we believe healing is a partnership. By understanding each person's routines, priorities, and hopes, therapy can be shaped around real life at home—not just around a list of clinical tasks.

What would be on your hard yes list? And what small step could help you experience more of it today?
